LONDON, Ont. - Isabelle Patterson is a new WOSSAA swimming record holder.

The St. Thomas native who attends Banting secondary school in London, shaved nearly a second off the old meet time in the open girls 100-metre back stroke, at WOSSAA, February 11 at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre.

Winning by nearly two seconds, in a minute and 6.36 seconds (1:06.36), Patterson lowered the record from 1:07.29.

"It feels really good to be in Grade 10 with a WOSSAA record but also makes me feel honoured," Patterson. "I would describe my 100 back as a decent swim. Going into it I really thought to myself how great of a training opportunity this was for me but also a way to try out new race strategies (and) finding ways to be fast and efficient with my race."

Patterson, 14, swims competively with the London Aquatic Club and had the Western Regional club championships, February 14-15th.

Patterson wasn't at 100 per cent at WOSSAA but gutted it out.

"I thought to myself a saying my coach always says, "technique under fatigue". As much as the race hurt, I dug deep and was really happy with the results."

Patterson also finished second in the 200 free (2:23.24) and swam the first leg, the backstrokes, on Banting's open girls 200m medley winning relay (2:00.72).

Unfortunately for Patterson, the Ontario Age Group (OAG) provincial meet, occurs the same week as OFSAA.

"Sadly I am not able to attend OFSAA, as it falls just a few days before OAG's for club swimming." said Patterson.

OFSAA, the high school provincial championships, will welcome WOSSAA event winners and swimmers hitting qualifying times, March 3-4 in Windsor.

East Elgin Eagles Louisa Begeman won open girls 50 free in 27.91 seconds and finished fourth in open girls 100 fly (1:10.72).

Begeman was on two open girls relay teams finishing second, the Eagles' 200 free, with Ava Campbell, Bridget Woolley and Emily Weninger and 200 medley (2:17.40), with Woolley, Weninger and Andi Hoffer.

Woolley also advances in the open girls 100m breast (1:21.11).

Eagles' Matt Charlton qualified in both the open boys 100m fly (1:03.65) and 100m free (56.64 sec.).

The Eagles placed second in the open division combined team standings, behind London Banting, but was first in the Quality Club team rankings. The Eagles' 13 athletes had 25.23 points, while Banting had 25.15 points with 59 athletes.

Banting took both the high school division boys and girls team titles.

Parkside and St. Joe's tied fifth in the high school men's team standings.

The Stampeders placed seventh in the high school combined boys and girls team standings, while the Rams were 10th.

St. Joseph's Rams Martino Vu qualified in four events in 14U boys, placing second in the 50m breaststroke (38.26 sec.), third in the 100 free (1:08.57), fourth in the 50 free (29.69 sec.) and with the Rams' gold medal winning U14 boys 200m medley relay team (2:06.39).

"It was a really good day for me. All of my events were personal bests," Vu said. "I was only expecting two qualifications, in the relay and and my 50 breast, but I got a really good rest last night. I was energized today. I hit all my personal bests today, so I'm happy about that."

With Vu on the 14U 200m medley relay team, are Owen Lupson, Evan Johnston and Evan Herr.

"Our relay was a really good race and I think we hit our personal best or really close to it. A really good time," said Vu, adding his best individual race was the 50 breaststroke. "I was really looking forward to it, as I knew I had an OFSAA qualifying time going into (WOSSAA). The other ones were really uncertain and I exceeded expectations, said Vu. "The 50 breast stroke I went far beyond the OFSAA qualifying time and I got a full second faster."

For OFSAA, Vu will drop the 100 free, as athletes are restricted to only two individual races at the provincial meet.

Lupson also qualified in the junior boys 50 free (29.79 sec.).

St. Joseph's Rams Brogans Hines moves on to OFSAA, after placing second in both the para 50 and 100 free races.

Parkside Stampeders Brynley Martin qualified in the 14U girls 100 I.M and 100 free, finishing eighth (1:32.42) and ninth (1:16.46), respectively.

"I'm a bit surprised," Martin said. "My I.M., I took off time from TVRA and it felt good. In my 100 free, I wasn't expecting it, but it just happened."

Stampeders Kloe Sleightholm, also qualified in the 14U 100 free (1:16.02).

Martin, Sleightholm, Megan Landon and Isabel Rodgers, placed third, qualifying for OFSAA in the 14U girls 200m free relay (2:21.80).

"It feels great to go with three of my closest friends," Martin said. "I felt confident about our relay because we were really dedicated to the race throughout the whole season."

All four members of the relay team, also are on the Parkside girls rugby team that advanced to OFSAA in 2025.

"Swimming definitely helps build your endurance for rugby and gets you prepared for all of the running," said Landon, adding it's a milestone for relay to be heading to OFSAA. "It's definitely really exciting. I was kind of scared, but we did it and we worked really hard to get here. I'm really happy."

Rodgers felt Sleightholm swam an instrumental leg for the team.

"I was thinking Kloe's got this, because she's super fast and always does great," praised Rodgers. "I'm really excited to go to OFSAA."

Louise Hollmeyer and Amy Williamson are relay alternates.

Parkside's Carter Morrison (36.16 sec.) and Jack Landon (38.26 sec.) will be at OFSAA both for the junior boys 50m back.

Stampeders Cameron Morrison returns to OFSAA, moving on in the 15 and over boys 100m I.M. (1:14.63).

Joseph Robinson will represent the Central Elgin Titans, in the para men's 50 back.
