BELLEVILLE, Ont. - OFSAA has become an annual destination for Dorchester Beavers girls soccer.
For a seventh consecutive season at the high school provincial championship, the Beavers advanced to the quarterfinals and this year, for a fourth time this decade, played for a medal on day three of the tournament.
The Beavers brought home antique bronze, after the St. Mary Crusaders from Hamilton, won the OFSAA girls AA bronze medal game, 4-2, June 6 at Loyalist College.
St. Mary opened the scoring six minutes into the game and led 3-1 at half.
Lauren Cooper scored both Beavers goals.
"It was a tough battle and a tough loss, but we did get a medal. Still a good experience," Beavers' captain Megan McLachlin said. "I'm lucky. I don't know how many people get to say they've got the opportunity to go to OFSAA four times. It's more fun every time. I'm definitely going to miss it."
McLachlin adds to a gold medal from 2003, when Dorchester won OFSAA 1-A and a bronze medal, from Dorchester's first year at the AA level in 2024.
In the semifinals against the Denis Morris Reds from St. Catharines, Dorchester battled back from down 2-0 to tie late in the second half, on goals from McLachlin and Hannah Boutette. Dennis Morris scored twice in added time, to advance to the gold medal match, on a 4-2 victory.
"It was a great tourney for us. We had a lot of really good plays and a lot of really good things happen," Beavers coach Andreas Nolte said. "The semifinal was a tough one. It was a game we were right in it. We had a couple of mistakes to go down, but we fought tooth and nail. With eight minutes to go and we had tied it 2-2, we just went for it. It opened us up at the back and they capitalized. Good on them."
Denis Morris won OFSAA gold, trailing St. Mike's from Bolton, 1-0, for 45 minutes, before rallying late with two goals in three minutes, around the 60 minute mark, for a 2-1 win.
"We had a great season. We progressed, progressed and progressed," Nolte said. "I couldn't have been any more proud of them. Great character kids."
Dorchester went 3-0-1 in pool play, opening with a 4-1 win against Arnprior, on goals by McLachlin, Sienna Brown, Rylee Beldman and Addy Lehouillier.
Hannah Boutette and Greer Boughner with two goals each and McLachlin scored, as the Beavers dumped Centennial from Belleville, 5-1, to improve to 2-0.
The Beavers lone loss in pool play was to St. Mike's, 5-2, with Brown and Lehouillier scoring, but the match strengthened the team.
"We were leading (2-1). We were all over them and then a couple of unfortunate bounces. They took that game, but we took a lot out of that game," said Nolte. "Every one on that team is playing year round soccer. We have one kid on our team playing year round soccer and we're competing toe to toe with them."
Dorchester defeated North Park from Brantford, 3-1, with Boughner, Boutette and McLachlin scoring.
In the quarterfinals, striking four times, McLachlin lifted the Beavers to a 5-3 victory, eliminating Thunder Bay Korah Collegiate.
Beware opponents back home in the WOSSAA region, all but two players return to the Beavers next season.
"The team will be in good hands," said McLachlin, one of the graduating players. "We have a lot of talent and leadership. The Beavers will be back next year at OFSAA."
Due to enrollment declining, Dorchester will be at the AA level one more year, before returning to single-A.
