ST. THOMAS - The St. Thomas Jr. Stars are Alliance U14 A/AA Constellation champs.
St. Thomas completed a three game sweep of the Kitchener Jr Rangers in the final, with a 5-2 win tonight at the Joe.
Tied a two mid second period, the Stars scored three unanswered goals, by Andrew Muylaert, Deakon Da Costa and Muylaert again late in the third period
Jack Lynch had both the Stars first two goals.
"The players really pushed all year to be the best and to elevate everybody's game, building a winning culture every day," Stars coach Tanner Turley said. "We were a group that came together at the start of the year. A lot of these kids didn't know each other."
In game one, Da Costa with two goals and Quinn Humphreys scored in a 3-1 win.
Down 2-0 in game two, St. Thomas rallied for a 3-2 win in overtime on a goal from Kai Kapogianis. Da Costa and Colton Poore also score for the Jr. Stars.
"It's a great way to end our season," Turley said. "The kids came to work and it paid off."
The semifinals offered a tougher challenge as St. Thomas needed all five games to oust the Woodstock Jr. Vets.
A tournament win in Niagara Falls, kicked off the season, giving a shot of confidence to the group of new teammates.
"It became apparent early they were going to have a good shot at it," Turley said. "The way these kids moved the puck is crazy for being 13 to 14 years old. They play the game the right way and lean on each other. We don't have any selfish people out there."
The Jr. Stars finished with an overall record of 50-8-5, including winning the Boston Pizza Cup in St. Thomas and making their regional Silver Stick final in Sudbury.
St. Thomas travelled to Fort Myers, Florida, for a tournament in February and won five games.
